South American countries are my favorite, not only because of the culture but also because of the rich taste of their fruit & veg and ideas how to prepare it! I love their grilled plantains with cheese (great as a post workout snack - thank you South America). Plantain is one of the main ingredients they use (they use it as vegetable for their dishes).
Plantains are actually a natural super food that many people are unaware of! Although they look similar to bananas, they are actually quite different. Plantains have to be cooked before being eaten (raw they are quite bitter, not that I've tried myself ), also plantain have more calories than bananas (100g of plantain has 122kcl, while banana has 89kcl). Plantains also provide a wide variety of health and nutritional benefits:
Fiber: Helps to keep bowel movements regular and reduce constipation
Vitamin C: This antioxidant helps build up your immune system
Vitamin A: Plays a role in vision and enhancing skin complexion
B6 (Pyridoxine): Beneficial in treating neuritis, anemia, and decreasing homocystein levels which are often associated with coronary artery disease and stroke episodes.
Potassium: helps control heart rate and blood pressure
