Targeted fat loss is the belief that if you target certain body parts you can lose fat from these areas. An example of this is that sit ups will reduce belly fat. A whole industry has been set up around this belief. Many 'ab machines' will promise to get rid of unwanted belly fat because they 'target problem areas'.
Unfortunately this is not true Many studies have been done on this subject (most recently in 2013) and all have the same result. When fat is broken down during exercise it can come from anywhere on your body, not just the area being exercised. If you want to lose belly fat you have to reduce fat all over your body. Another problem is that isolation exercises (exercise that targets a specific muscle) do not burn many calories. This means that doing hundreds of sit ups every day will not even reduce your overall body fat much.
So what is the answer? One of the best ways to burn fat is high intensity interval training (like in my videos) combined with a diet plan that means you eat less calories a day than you use. Another option is to add weight training to your program as well. Ab exercises are still useful (I use them in my videos) as they strengthen your core and prevent injury. The simple answer is there is no easy fix. It is a combination of good diet and regular exercise that will get you the results you want
